Premier League outfit Chelsea are keeping close tabs on Atlético Madrid star Jose Gimenez as they want to complete the signing of the player, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Fabrizio was on the Here We Go Podcast via The Sun where he revealed that Chelsea hold a strong desire to bring the player to Stamford Bridge to further bolster their defensive department, despite making summer additions of defensive options who have all impressed since joining.

José Gimenez has been fantastic for Atlético Madrid this season and has established himself as an integral part of Diego Simeone’s setup. He has blended so well to Simeone’s system and has flourished both defensively and has injected some little flair in the attacking play as well.

As a result, the player has now reportedly been targeted by The Blues boss Frank Lampard who will like to have Gimenez as a player he can call upon and call his own.

The last summer saw Lampard splash the cash on key and big-name defenders Ben Chilwell from Leicester City and Thiago Silva who became a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain following a successful stint at the French club.

Chelsea also signed goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and both him and the other defenders that were signed alongside him have been pivotal for Chelsea this season, as they have become more solid at the back, while also scoring goals and securing huge wins both in the Premier League and in the Champions League.

It is a reasonable idea that Chelsea want to sign Gimenez who is still only 25, as Silva is already 36 even though he is rumored to want to be offered a new deal. Gimenez, should he join, would be coming in as a direct replacement for Silva when the Brazilian will finally leave the club.

Should the deal go through, it would be a good one for both the player who wants to taste the Premier League waters, and the club who want to win the League trophy.
